Fabrication of a durable anti-icing composite coating based on polyurethane elastomer and silica nanoparticles

Abstract In order to design and fabricate hydrophobic, durable anti-icing coating for aircraft, a polyurethane elastomer matrix was hydrophobically modified incorporated with fluorinated SiO 2 nanoparticles prepare micro/nanostructured coating. The low surface energy displayed significantly improved mechanical properties hydrophobicity, which exhibited the water contact angle of 162° as well sliding 2°. is highly stretchable, could sustain large-scale extension, exhibits tensile strength elongation at break up 16.22 MPa 385%, respectively. Furthermore, remarkably weak ice adhesion 14.33 kPa, on accumulative prone fall off under natural wind its own weight. sustained long-term superhydrophobic performance even after 1000 abrasion cycles. proposed method production scalable cost-effective can be applied in aerospace automotive systems.
